LA Based Crime Fiction

ABOUT DARK HOURS BOOKS

We are a boutique crime fiction publisher of high quality books, stressing quality over quantity.

We believe the best crime fiction is about far more than crime.

It is about character under pressure. Secrets and consequences. Justice and revenge. Desire and desperation. The choices people make when the rules no longer seem to apply—and the lines they discover they are willing to cross.

Our books may feature private investigators, police officers, criminals, journalists, fixers, victims, killers, or ordinary people caught in extraordinary circumstances. Our characters don't always fit comfortably on either side of the law.

Our stories may take place today or decades ago, but they all unfold on dark streets across an entire city.

We want to publish books readers remember.

Books they recommend.

Books they keep.

Books good they keep reading into the dark hours.

WHAT WE PUBLISH

Crime fiction with a sense of character, theme, and place.

Dark Hours Books publishes established and emerging writers working throughout the crime-fiction tradition, including mystery, noir, hard-boiled fiction, historical crime, thrillers, suspense, private-eye fiction, police procedurals, and original short-story anthologies.

We are particularly drawn to books that combine compelling storytelling with vivid settings, distinctive voices, memorable characters, and moral complexity.

We want stories that take us somewhere.

A neighborhood. A city. A particular moment in history. A world most readers have never entered.

We believe crime fiction can entertain while exploring something deeper about people, places, and the choices we make when circumstances push us to our limits.

Genre fiction can be both popular and lasting.

Our goal is simple:

To publish crime fiction worth reading—and worth keeping.

OUR AUTHORS

Distinctive , diverse, independent voices.

Publishing begins with writers.

Dark Hours Books exists to publish compelling voices, connecting authors and readers through unique crime books.

OUR BOOKS

Stories worth staying up for.

Every Dark Hours book begins with the same question:

Is this a story we can't wait to put into a reader's hands?

Our library includes novels, mysteries, thrillers, historical crime fiction, noir, hard-boiled fiction, and original anthologies bringing together established writers and exciting new voices.

Some stories take readers into Hollywood's past.

Others explore contemporary Los Angeles.

Some follow detectives hunting killers. Others follow people running from them.

Some begin with a body.

Others take a little longer to get there.

DARK HOURS ANTHOLOGIES

Many voices. One dark world.

The short crime story has always been one of the genre's great forms.

Dark Hours Anthologies bring together established authors, emerging writers, and distinctive new voices around places, communities, professions, histories, and themes that offer fresh ways of exploring crime and its consequences.

A city can be explored through its streets, its history, its music, its neighborhoods, its professions, its disasters, its legends, and the people who experience parts of it the rest of us rarely see.

Each anthology begins with a strong editorial concept and is guided by an editor with a particular vision for the collection.

The result should be something more than a collection of unrelated stories.

Each book becomes a portrait of a place, a world, or a community—seen through the dark lens of crime fiction.

OUR PUBLISHING PHILOSOPHY

The book matters.

We believe readers notice quality.

Dark Hours Books is committed to thoughtful editing, professional typography, distinctive cover design, careful proofreading, quality production, and editions designed to be read, enjoyed, collected, and kept.

We also believe authors deserve publishing partners who respect their work, their voices, and their careers.

Publishing should be a collaboration.

That means asking questions. Trying new ideas. Taking creative risks. Finding new ways to reach readers. And recognizing that no two books—and no two authors—should be published exactly the same way.

We respect the traditions that built crime fiction while remaining open to where the genre goes next.

Technology will change.

Formats will change.

The ways readers discover books will change.

The reason we publish them won't.

The book matters.

OUR STORY

Born in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles has always belonged to crime fiction.

Sunshine and shadows. Movie stars and murderers. Mansions and motels. Palm trees and dark streets. Reinvention and regret.

Few places contain so many contradictions—or have inspired so many unforgettable crime stories.

Los Angeles helped shape the American hard-boiled tradition, and its streets have become part of the mythology of crime fiction. From Hollywood and Downtown to the canyons and beaches, from Sunset Boulevard and Mulholland Drive to neighborhoods rarely seen on movie screens, LA has provided generations of writers with an extraordinary landscape for stories about ambition, desperation, crime, justice, and the elusive possibility of redemption.

Dark Hours Books grew from a lifelong love of that tradition and from a belief that place matters.

A great setting doesn't simply provide a backdrop. It shapes the people who live there, the choices they make, the crimes they commit, and the stories we tell about them.

Los Angeles is where Dark Hours began, and LA crime fiction remains at the heart of our identity.

But our interests extend wherever great crime stories take us.

Because every city has its shadows.

Every place has its secrets.

And some stories belong in the dark.
